Goals: Students will have to explore, share and reflect about cultural dimensions and values (Hall, 1976; Hofstede, 1994) connected with their native language and culture (Spanish) as well with the target language and culture (English)

 

Step 1. Students can choose between writing a promotional leaflet and a movie review in their native (Spanish) and target language (English), upload and share the task on the Google-Community.

 

Step 2. Students will read a promotional leaflet and a movie review in both languages where the use of interactive and interactional metadiscourse strategies is employed.

 

Step 3. Students will watch both a video based on a TV ad in which a journey to a particular place for holidays is advertised as well as a video in which reviewers comment on a particular film they have watched recently and make recommendations for potential viewers (The videos will be watched both in English and Spanish, and will include the use of metadiscourse strategies). After that, students will have to answer some questions in relation to the content of those videos.

 

Step 4. Students will share their responses to the questions about the videos first in pairs and then in small groups or with the rest of the class. Then, feedback will be provided.

 

Summary of tasks:

 

  1. Writing a promotional leaflet/movie review and make use of metadiscourse strategies
  2. Answer video questions
  3. Share video responses and exchange feedback regarding the influence of cultural values on the use of metadiscourse strategies both in English and Spanish

 

 

 
DESCRIPTION OF TASKS:

 

  1. Students will have to write either a promotional leaflet or a movie review and make use of interactive and interactional metadiscourse strategies. They will write it in English and Spanish.
  2. Students will watch a TV ad and a video in which film reviewers comment and recommend movies and where the use of metadiscourse strategies is employed.
  3. Students will have to answer some questions in relation to the content of the videos, upload them in Google+Community and share views with their classmates in the forum. They will particularly concentrate on describing the impact of cultural values on the use of metadiscourse strategies in English and Spanish.
