STAGE 5.1: Development: Reflections and evaluation

Stage 5.1 overview:

In this stage you will receive the instructions needed to complete the steps of the 7th phase of the BEGIN project: assessing the project and reflecting on the learning gains by completing the post-intervention questionnaire and participating in the focus-group inter-views.

STAGE 5.1: Development:

Reflections and evaluation

Dates: Week 10 and 11 (peer assessment of oral presentations, voting, focus groups interviews and farewell video).
Deadline for peer assessment of oral presentations and voting: End of Week 10. Deadline focus groups interviews & farewell video: End of Week 11.
Theme & goals: Reflections, evaluation and adjourning the Virtual Exchange.
Step 1.

 

Assessment of oral presentations:

Students attend all local groups’ oral presentations and individually assess them using the self-assessment and peer-assessment score sheets provided by their teacher. Students vote for the best 3 local oral presentations.

The deadline for completing your oral presentations assessment sheets is: End of Week 10.

 

Step 2.

 

Voting:

Students vote for the 3 best oral presentations (local) and 3 best digital stories (local and foreign) using the online polls.

Step 3. Evaluation of Virtual Exchange project:

Students complete the Post-intervention questionnaire.

Step 4 Best video and best presentation awards:

Students are awarded their best digital story, second best digital story, best oral presentation, and second best oral presentation awards in the award ceremony.

Step 5 Reflections on and evaluation of the main Virtual Exchange project:

Students complete the post-questionnaire on Virtual Exchange.

 

Step 6 Focus groups interviews:

Students participate in focus groups interviews discussing and reflecting on the Virtual Exchange project.

 

Focus groups questions:
1.     Describe your experience with Virtual Exchange with foreign students as part of your English/Spanish course at the University.
2.     What issues have arisen from your work with foreign students through Virtual Exchange?

What has gone smoothly and what has been challenging in this work?

What have you learned and what has been the greatest difficulty?

3.     When interacting with the foreign students, how did you ensure that communication was effective?

How did you overcome problems/difficulties in working with distant foreign students?

4.     Has your participation in the Virtual Exchange activities changed significantly the way you view:
a) language learning?

b) collaboration?

c) culture?

d) online interaction?

e) technology in education?

5.     Has your participation in the Virtual Exchange activities been effective in developing:
a)     your language skills?

b)     your digital (technology) skills?

c)     your relationship with your fellow students?

d)     your relationship with your teacher?

6.     Is there anything you would add/change in this project? (tasks, digital tools, time spent, duration).

Teacher’s notes (5.1- Development: Reflections and evaluation)
Step 1 T explains how to assess the oral presentations by providing a score to each of the items in the rubric.
Step 2 Creates voting polls and provides students with the link in their Google+ Community so that they vote for the 3 best oral presentations (local) and 3 best digital stories (local and Virtual Exchange).
Step 3 Asks students to complete the Post-intervention questionnaire by providing them with the link to the online form .
Step 4 Awards their best digital story, second best digital story, best oral presentation, and second best oral presentation awards in the award ceremony.
Step 5 Encourages reflections on and evaluation of the main Virtual Exchange project by having students complete the post-questionnaire on Virtual Exchange.
Step 6 Asks a Teaching Assistant or student volunteer to conduct the focus groups interviews in which students are encouraged to discus and reflect on the Virtual Exchange project.
