STAGE 4.2: Developing a business innovation for a social problem and presenting it in a digital story
Dates: Weeks 5, 6 and 7, from __________ to __________
Deadlines digital stories tasks: First draft of script: End of Week 5; final (corrected) script: End of Week 6; sharing the digital stories: End of Week 7: assessing the digital stories: End of Week 8.
Theme & goals: | Collaborative development of a new product/service/app so as to: 1) learn to develop collaborative projects and to co-create artefacts by working together in multinational teams so as to reach a common goal connected to solving a social problem or fulfilling a social need 2) become more aware of what aspects of their business cultures are different to the members of different business cultures (cultural self-awareness).
Step 1. Brainstorming, exploring regional needs and choosing a social problem | In your local groups read the scenario ‘Becoming a social entrepreneur’ and brainstorm ideas about possible regional needs and community social problems. Remember, your job is to choose a pressing social problem of your community and address it. This problem could be related to poverty, environment, immigration, school, animal rights, gender equality, etc. Once you identify a problem, you can start working out a feasible business solution. Create a New Google doc on your local group’s shared folder and note down your ideas. Name this doc ‘Ideas for our solution’.
Step 2. Choosing your product/service/app: | In your groups, read the ‘Developing, designing and marketing a new product/service/app’ scenario and brainstorm ideas and possible answers to the different questions about the new product. Keep in mind that your product can be a good, which is tangible, a service which is intangible, or a hybrid which is a combination of a good and a service. It can also be an App for a mobile phone. Create a New Google doc on your group’s shared folder and note down your ideas. Name this doc ‘Ideas for our solution’ and consider the questions below.
All preparatory work is carried out on the Google Drive (Google Docs and Google Slides). Each group creates their folder on Google Drive. All group members and the teacher have access and editing rights in the folders. |
|||||
Step 3. Thinking about your digital story and watching examples: | In your groups, think of the kind of 3 to 4 minute-long digital story you’d like to make (a video combining moving pictures and voice-over narration/a video in which you are the actors and actresses/ a video combining still images and voice-over narration). Add these ideas to your group’s GoogleDoc shared document ‘Ideas for our solution’. Watch the examples provided below to get an idea of the main elements that make up a digital story.
Step 4. Thinking about the topic, structure, software and resources for your digital story: | In your groups, think of the following aspects: a) how to approach the topic in an original and appealing way; b) the overall structure of your digital story c) the software you will use to make your digital story (Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, PPT, Prezi, etc.) d) the kinds of resources you will need (information resources, audiovisual and textual resources, etc.). Note down these ideas in your shared Google doc ‘Ideas for our solution’[1].
Step 5: Creating the storyboard: | In your groups start creating a storyboard for your digital story, which will help you decide how many scenes you’d like to have, how you would coordinate the images with the voice-over narration, etc. Add these ideas to your shared Google doc ‘Ideas for our solution’[2].
Step 6: Creating your script: | In your groups, create the script of your digital story by following the different steps.
Step 6.1. Finding a title for your digital story and organising your work: | In your groups, brainstorm and make decisions about your script and about the title of your digital story (an example of a good, self explanatory title would be “A digital story about SolfamiredoApp, a new and innovative product”). Next, in your group’s folder, create a New Google doc named “SCRIPT” and write your script collaboratively with your partners. Once you finish writing your script, ONLY ONE FILE PER GROUP SHOULD BE SENT THROUGH your institution’s e
Step 6.2. Sharing this first draft of your script and giving & receiving feedback: | Share the first draft of your script with your foreign partners in order to get their feedback & suggestions.
Step 6.3. Writing and submitting the final version of your script: | Modify the first draft of your script based on your foreign partner’s comments and submit the final version through your university’s learning management system.
Step 7. Putting the audiovisual resources together and finalizing & sharing your digital stories: | In your groups, work together towards completing your digital stories. Put together your audio and visual resources and once you finalize your videos, share them on the G+ Community8
Step 7. Assessing the digital stories: | Watch the different Virtual Exchange groups’ digital stories which have previously been uploaded onto the Google+ Community and individually provide constructive feedback for at least 3 digital stories using the digital stories assessment sheets provided by your teacher (Annex I). Write your opinion (about 5 lines) about at least 3 digital stories in the forum by using the «Comment» button. Fill in the assessment sheet to give peer feedback on at least 2 digital stories shared by your foreign partners. After watching all digital stories and assessing and giving feedback on at least 3, and vote for the best digital stories (3 local and 3 foreign). |

Social Entrepreneurship scenario: (Step 1) |
Becoming a Social Entrepreneur
You own a successful company and you want to use your skills and experience to become a social entrepreneur and make a positive change in the world! In order to achieve your goal, you need to combine and apply your knowledge of business management principles and your drive to offer to your community. You have decided to explore the needs in your region in order to identify a pressing problem that you would like to address. You need to contact an NGO, association or volunteer group and conduct an interview so as to understand how you can contribute in solving a problem. You understand that this needs a lot of hard work, passion, inspiration and creativity, so you decide to join forces with your young and enthusiastic colleagues and come up with a feasible business idea to help the community. Your idea will be presented in a digital story and an oral presentation to the particular NGO, association or volunteer group that you have selected to support. |
Here are some possible questions you will need to consider:

Which specific problem can we address? |
What kind of solution can we develop? |
Who will benefit from our solution and how will they benefit? |
What action steps do we need to take in order to implement the solution? |
Who do we need to speak with in order to develop our solution? |
What resources (human, economic) and materials will we need to develop our solution? |
How much will our solution cost? |
How do you intend to raise funds for implementing the solution? |
How long will our solution take to implement? |
How can we monitor the implementation of our solution? |
Questions about your new product/service/app: (Step 2) |
Here are some possible questions you will need to consider: |
What functionality does your product provide? |
Who will use your product? Why will they use it? |
What problems can your product solve? |
What advantages does your product present? |
Why is your product superior to other products? |
What are the dimensions of your product? |
How much will your product cost? |

Teacher’s notes – 4.2: Social entrepreneurship collaborative artefact construction 1: Digital story
Step 1 | T asks students to read the scenario and the information about the main project task: a digital story about the creation of a new product/service The overall idea of the main Virtual Exchange project is to create a 4-minute long digital story and to deliver an oral presentation within the general theme: “Creating a new product/service/app”. Working in their Virtual Exchange teams, they’ll deal with the scenario below. |
Step 2 | Tells students to conduct a brainstorming session and to choose the product/service/app around which the project will turn, using the different questions to make decisions about their chosen tangible or intangible business idea.
T explains that all preparatory work is carried out on the Google Drive (Google Docs and Google Slides). Each group will create their folder on Google Drive, giving access to the teacher and team members. |
Step 3 | Encourages students to plan their digital story and to watch examples, reminding them to note their ideas in a GoogleDoc shared document ‘Ideas for our new product’. |
Step 4 | Explains that students should think about the topic, structure, software and resources for their digital story and note down their ideas in your shared GoogleDoc ‘Ideas for our new product’. |
Step 5 | Shows students how to create their storyboard and shows them examples. |
Step6.1 | Outlines the step-by-step process of creating the script of the digital stories and encourages students to create a New Google doc named “SCRIPT” |
Step 6.2 | Asks students to share this first draft of your script and giving & receiving feedback. |
Step 6.3 | Asks students to submit the final version of the script. |
Step 7 | Tells students to put together your audio and visual resources and share the finalised digital stories on the G+ Community. |
Step 8 | Explains students how to complete the peer assessment sheets and provide their feedback on the Google+ Community. |
Possible challenges | Difficulty with multimedia artefact production due to lack of experience, complexity and multimodality. |
